untitled (Ocean Neckpiece) 1996
Crab claw fragments, horseshoe crab tail, Victorian bone buttons, steel wire, antique washi paper, leather, soil.

Collected on my first trip to Haystack Mountain School for Crafts in Deer Isle, Maine, these crab 'thumbs' carpeted the beach under a fishermen's pier. They simply begged this piece to be made. I added a horseshoe crab's tail from my Connecticut home gatherings, and the piece was born. Antique Asian paper webs across them and keeps the form intact, while a leather cord runs through them. 19th-century bone buttons and steel wire make up the clasp.

Seldom seen and never before offered for sale, here is a rare chance to own a 24-year-old piece from my early found-object days.
